When the first snow falls, most folks tuck their bikes away until spring. Not the Boreal Cycling Club! In its first full year of operation, this enthusiastic group is determined to keep the wheels turning all year long. The club maintains around 25 kilometres of bike trails at the Hersey Lake Conservation Area, where dedicated volunteers clear brush, remove deadfalls, and groom the trails to keep them smooth and rideable, even in winter.

Timmins has plenty of outdoor fun like snowmobiling, four-wheeling, dirt biking, and cross-country skiing, but the club recognized a glaring absence of cycling options. That’s where we come in! We’re here to promote cycling and create an awesome community that thrives on two wheels. Sure, it’s great to cruise on a snowmobile, but nothing beats the health benefits of cycling!

With 35 members this year and growing, we’re ready to welcome even more cycling enthusiasts. Our trails attract about 80 cyclists in the summer, but only around 20 brave souls venture out in the winter. We’d love to have everyone join our club because without us, those trails wouldn’t be maintained!

Membership is a steal at $50 a year, covering insurance, trail maintenance, and the operating costs of our non-profit club. We’re not just looking to keep our current trails in shape; we have a wish list of new trails we’d love to add! Of course, that means getting agreements with landowners, so there’s plenty of behind-the-scenes work happening.

Mark your calendars! We’ll be hosting a fun year-end gathering in April, plus an upcoming informal event where you can try out fat bikes—perfect for winter adventures. So grab your gear, and let’s ride!
