Trail Overview
Partnership with the MRCA
The Boreal Cycling Club works closely with the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority (MRCA) in a collaborative partnership for all trail development and maintenance activities. This partnership ensures that our trail network at Hersey Lake Conservation Area is developed sustainably and in alignment with environmental protection standards. By working with the MRCA, we are able to preserve the natural beauty of the area while providing safe, enjoyable trails for cyclists. Together, we strive to create a balanced approach that supports both outdoor recreation and conservation efforts.
Single-Track Trails
Our single-track trails are ideal for riders who want a more technical and challenging experience. These narrow, winding paths take you through the dense boreal forest, over roots, rocks, and varying elevations. Expect a mix of smooth sections and rugged terrain, perfect for honing your bike-handling skills. The single-track trails cater to intermediate and advanced cyclists, offering an immersive, cross-country ride in a beautiful natural setting.
Multi-Use Trails
For riders looking for a more relaxed ride, the wider, multi-use trails are perfect. These trails are shared with hikers and are great for cyclists who prefer a less technical ride. With gentle inclines and smoother surfaces, these trails provide a scenic route through the conservation area, making them suitable for families, beginners, and those looking for a casual ride.
Key Features
- Scenic Routes: Our trails wind through picturesque boreal forest landscapes, offering riders a tranquil setting amidst nature. Keep an eye out for wildlife and stunning views of Hersey Lake.
- Technical Sections: For those seeking a challenge, certain trails feature rocky sections, tree roots, and steep climbs that require agility and control. These areas are perfect for testing your mountain biking skills.
- Variety of Terrain: From flat, easy-going paths to more rugged and technical trails, our network provides a diverse riding experience. Each trail offers something different, keeping the ride exciting no matter your skill level.
Trail Difficulty Levels
- Beginner: If you’re new to mountain biking or just want an easy-going ride, our multi-use trails offer gentle slopes and fewer obstacles, perfect for building confidence.
- Intermediate: For those with some experience, our single-track trails provide a moderate challenge with rolling terrain, occasional obstacles, and fun twists and turns.
- Advanced: Riders looking for a serious challenge will enjoy the more technical sections, which include steep climbs, tight turns, and natural obstacles like rocks and roots that require advanced bike-handling skills.

We’re also constantly working to expand and enhance the trail system, offering new paths for riders to explore.
Trail Etiquette
To ensure everyone enjoys the trails, we encourage all cyclists to follow these simple guidelines:
- Yield to other users: Slow down when approaching hikers or other cyclists, and be courteous.
- Stay on marked trails: Help preserve the environment and avoid damaging sensitive areas by sticking to the designated trails.
- Respect nature: Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but tire tracks. Please pack out all trash and respect the wildlife.
